Employment-based visas allow foreign workers to live and work in the United States either temporarily (nonimmigrant visas) or on an ongoing basis (immigrant visas). Immigrant visas may lead to eligibility for lawful permanent residency (Green Card) and then citizenship.
U.S. Citizens and permanent residents may be able to sponsor a family member for visas and permanent residency (Green Card). An unlimited number of visas are available every year for immediate relatives of U.S. citizens. Prospective immigrants in this category must meet standard eligibility criteria, and petitioners must meet certain age and financial requirements. A limited number of visas are available for non-immediate family members.
