Patrick B. McDermott is a partner with CARNEY PATTERSON MEADE PLC. Mr. McDermott was admitted to the Virginia State Bar in 1977. He joined the firm as a partner in 2021. His practice is focused upon forming and assisting Non-Profit organizations, Small Businesses and Trusts & Estates.

Forming and representing public charities [501 (c) (3)] is one of Mr. McDermott’s most enjoyable areas of practice, and the one that provides the greatest benefit to the Hampton Roads community. Among his clients are many of the best-known non-profits, many of them aiding people in the fields of aging, mental health, substance abuse and developmental disability.

Small businesses face their own challenges. Whether Mr. McDermott’s client is a cabinet builder, a Thai restaurant, or a technology startup, Mr. McDermott welcomes the opportunity to assist in establishing and maintaining a limited liability company or corporation. Eventually, he can assist with changes in ownership and in succession planning. He is currently the registered agent (a requirement in Virginia) of approximately sixty companies. He also provides independent counsel to local banks making large loans to businesses that are acquiring or refinancing business-related property.

In drafting documents pertaining to Trusts & Estates, Mr. McDermott has learned to listen carefully to the spoken and unspoken needs of his clients. In blended families, especially, the clients will sometimes use him as a sounding board to express thoughts that they have never been able to express to each other before that moment. Similarly, when determining which of the adult children are best suited to hold a Durable General Power of Attorney, or to be named as an agent in an Advance Medical Directive, clients must be able to express themselves freely in a suitable milieu.

Finally, Mr. McDermot has vast experience in the field of substitute decision making.  This involves Guardianships, Conservatorships, Powers of Attorney and Advance Medical Directives.
